Top Four Finish Not A Must : Hughes

Posted on November 17 2009 by Mubeen

hughesMark Hughes has said that City’s campaign would not be regarded as a flop if they fail to finish in the top four of the Premier League. Manchester City spent more than a £100 million to improve their squad bringing in top players like Adebayor, Lescott, Barry and Tevez. Manchester City have failed to secure a win and instead drawn their last 5 matches on a trot. This would be considered a failure as the money had failed to produce results. Manchester City are currently sitting 6th on the table. That is, two places below where they should be to consider their campaign a success.

“With the resources we have, people are saying the top four is the minimum requirement. That is actually not the case,” said Hughes. ”The clubs you have to overcome to get there are not just the best teams in the Premier League, they are also some of the best teams in the world. That is the challenge for everybody. And it is very difficult. What we are looking for is progress and I would defy anyone to say we have not made progress from where we were last year.”

Manchester City is the only team in the Premier League to have lost only one game; and the defeat was a very unfortunate one where Manchester United scored in the 96th minute to win 4 – 3. Only 13 games have been played so far and there are plenty more games for City to prove their worth.

“In terms of where we were last year and where we are now, it is a different place. I am pleased with the progress we are making and that will continue. I am certain of it. However well prepared you are, however well organised you are, or how much thought goes into a plan to bring success to a club, sport is a difficult business. It is fluid,” said Hughes.

Manchester City take on Liverpool at Anfield this Saturday and Manchester City have the opportunity to bounce back right in by beating Liverpool and show everyone that City can definitely book their spot in the Champions League next season.
